Meet Prism
A modern Windows file and archive explorer. Browse archives, extract only what you need, preview your files and choose compression methods with size estimates. Keep large folder scans running in the background.
Move between folders and archives in a familiar tabbed interface. Prism brings previews, compression, storage tools and file operations together, with the same dark, light and system appearance as Pulse.
Take only what you need
Open an archive, select files or folders and copy or extract that selection. Selecting a folder includes its children, so you can retrieve a resource pack or document without unpacking everything else.
Use Ctrl+C inside an archive and paste into Windows Explorer. Solid archives may still need to decode earlier entries before reaching the selected files.
See files before opening them
Preview images, PDF pages, Office document text, Markdown, code and more from the details panel. Media previews use playback controls, while unsupported binary files can show a hex preview.
Switch between Details, List, Tiles and Icons. Local image thumbnails make visual folders easier to browse; tabs keep several locations close at hand.
Choose how to compress
Choose from 17 format and method combinations, including ZIP, 7z, TAR and single-file compression. ZIP Deflate is a good default for everyday sharing; other methods offer different compatibility and compression trade-offs.
Prism samples a small amount of content to estimate the result. The estimate is a range, not a guaranteed final size.
Let folder scans run in the background
Choose drives or individual folders, then carry on browsing or close Prism to the tray while scans run. Calculated sizes appear on folder entries and child-folder results are reused.
Cached results and tracked changes reduce repeat work. Eco, Balanced and Fast modes let you choose the workload. A first scan of millions of items still takes time; unavailable items are reported rather than silently counted as zero.
Formats, setup and everyday use
Browse ZIP, RAR/RAR5, 7z, TAR and compressed TAR variants, plus GZip, BZip2, XZ, LZip and Zstandard streams. ZIP-based formats include JAR, WAR, EAR, APK, NUPKG, VSIX, EPUB, CBZ, IPA, XPI and WHL.
Opening an archive container lets you inspect its files; it does not run the app, game or document inside it.
ZIP: Deflate, Store, BZip2, LZMA, PPMd and Zstandard.
7z: non-solid LZMA2 or LZMA.
TAR: uncompressed, GZip, BZip2, LZip or Zstandard.
Single-file streams: GZip, BZip2, LZip or Zstandard.
RAR and XZ creation, encrypted archive creation, and CAB/ISO/WIM/DMG browsing are not currently supported.
Install Prism and open Settings ? Explorer integration to enable per-user commands for opening, compressing and extracting files. On Windows 11, these commands appear under Show more options. Your existing default file associations stay in place.
Open Prism from Windows Search whenever you want the full tabbed explorer.
Scans continue while browsing or running in the tray. Exiting the app stops active jobs; completed scan data is retained for reuse. A partial or unverified marker explains when a size is not yet complete.
Previews are bounded to avoid loading whole large files unnecessarily. Office macros are not executed, and HTML, SVG and RTF are shown as source text.
